John Black

Royal Military Artificers. They were raised to strengthen coastal defences in 1787. In 1798 there were 8 companies of 100 men each in Woolwich, Chatham, Dover, Portsmouth, Gosport, Plymouth, Ireland and Channel Islands. However, although the members of these companies were expert at constructing static fortifications and other works they had little experience of field (combat) engineering. Their shortcomings became very apparent during the early stages of the wars with France and in 1812 they were replaced by the Corps of Sappers and Miners in 1812. (2)
